SoH/tDC is a psycho-geographical social sculpture. The Deterritorialized Church is the second movement to the Sanctuary of Hope, an antinomian church in Ridgewood, Queens based on the anthropological and economic studies of Georges Bataille. The project was conceived upon the adoption of a found corner-store church, abandoned after a fire. We moved in one year after the fire and decided to rebuild the church in our likeness.
The Deterritorialized Church is both a break from, as well as a continuation of the Sanctuary of Hope. Having legally surrendered the site of its inception, the project has taken on a Deleuzian nomadic structure, hosting unique social experimentations through a curatorship of situations. These situations or reterritorializations are examinations of disused, donated, or disregarded spaces with the social and material elements of the church reconfigured onto them. They may take the form of lines of flight, revivals, witnessings, becomings or zoological recontextualizations.
